Running Case It on Catalina (or later Mac OS)

Important:  The steps below are only necessary if you are using Catalina (or later) Mac OS.  If you are using Mojave (or earlier), you should use these instructions to run Case It, rather than the instructions below.  To determine your operating system, use the Apple menu in the upper left-hand corner of your desktop and select ‘About this Mac‘.

NoteIf your institution is eligible, you may be able to download Windows 10 Education for free, and install it on your Mac via Boot Camp.  This would enable you to run Case It and any other Windows application on your Mac, regardless of operating system, for as long as you like at no cost. If your institution is not eligible, then follow the steps below to install Crossover, a commercial version of WINE with a free 14-day trial.  This commercial version is necessary to run Case It with Catalina.  If  you are running Mojave or an earlier version of the Mac OS, then you can use the free version of WINE.

To run Case It on the latest Mac operating system (Catalina 10.15), you will need to download the free 14-day trial version of Crossover v19.  After 14 days, a registration code will be necessary, which can be purchased at the Codeweavers web site. The steps below will only have to be done once, and after that it will be easy to open Case It via Crossover.  If you want to see images of particular screens described below, click on the links in the instructions below, then hit the back button of your browser to return to this list of instructions.

We will use the installation of v7.0.4 as an example, but everything below also pertains to the installation of v7.0.3.  (Note: Case It v7.0.4 is required to run the new CRISPR exercise.)

  1. Use the Apple icon menu (upper left corner of your desktop) to open System Preferences, and click on ‘Security and Privacy‘ (icon that looks like a house).  Click on the ‘General’ button.  Leave this window open and off to the side, as you will need it to authorize Case It later on.  This is because Apple has greatly increased computer security on Catalina, via a part of the operating system called ‘Gatekeeper’.

  2. Download Case It v7.0.4.  Double-click on the zip file to extract it to your desktop (do not install WINE).

  3.  Download the free trial version of Crossover.

  4. Open Crossover v19 and click the ‘Install a Windows Application‘ button.

  5. Click the ‘Browse All Applications‘ button at the bottom of the window.

  6. Click on ‘Unlisted application‘ (to highlight this line) at the bottom of the list, then click the ‘Continue‘ button at lower right of that same window.

  7. Click on ‘Choose Installer File‘.

  8. Browse to locate the application ‘Case It v7.0.4’ inside the Case It folder, click on it to highlight it, then click on ‘Use this installer‘ at lower right.

  9. Click the ‘Continue‘ button at lower right.

  10. Click the ‘Install‘ button at lower right.  During the installation process, a window will pop up saying ‘Case It v7.0.4.exe cannot be opened because the developer cannot be verified.’  Click the ‘Cancel‘ button, and look at the Security and Privacy window that you left open in Step 1 of these instructions.  It will say something like “Case It v7.0.4 was blocked from use because it is not from an identified developer.”  Click the ‘Allow Anyway’ button.

  11. Case It will open to its first splash screen.  Immediately quit Case It (by clicking the red button at the upper left of the splash screen, above the word ‘About’).  This will enable the installation process to continue.

  12. After the installation process finishes (in a few seconds), click the ‘Done’ button at lower right.

  13. Double-click the ‘Run Command’ of Crossover (sprocket-shaped icons).  Another window will pop up.  Click the ‘Browse’ button on this window.

  14. Browse to the Case It v7.0.4 PC folder, double-click on it, then double-click on the Case It v7.0.4 application inside this folder.

  15. Click on ‘Save Command as a Launcher‘.  A message from Catalina will pop up saying that ‘macOS cannot verify the developer of “Case It v7.0.4.exe”.  Are you sure that you want to open it?’.  Click ‘Open‘ on this message, then click the ‘Run’ button on the same window that was used to save the command as a launcher.
Note:  This time click the Open button, don’t click the Cancel button as you did in Step 10 above.

  16. Case It will then open to its first screen.  If you want to run the program, click the ‘Click here to begin‘ button.

  17. The next time you want to run Case It, all you have to do is open Crossover and click on the ‘Case It v7.0.4’ launcher button.  (Don’t click on Case it v7.0.4.exe, as you’ll have to repeat the above process.)

Remember, unless you purchase a registration code for Crossover, ($40) the free trial will expire in 14 days.  This code can be purchased at the Codeweavers web site.  If you are not running Catalina on your Mac, then it is not necessary to use Crossover v19, as the free version of WINE (upon which Crossover is based) is provided with the Case It download.  This applies to Mojave and earlier Mac operating systems.
